While often associated with modern technology, lasers have been developed over several decades. The concept was first proposed in 1957, with the first working laser built in 1960. The underlying principles date back even further, to Albert Einstein\u2019s early 20th-century work describing the physical processes that make laser operation possible.<br><br>As interest in the technology grew, both commercial and governmental organisations began exploring its potential, often before clear applications had been fully defined. This early stage of development led to lasers being described as a \u2018solution looking for a problem\u2019\u2014highlighting their versatility and the wide range of uses that would later emerge.<br><br>Nowadays lasers are developed for specific tasks and their characteristics are developed to meet the requirements of the application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">Lasers probably have one of the widest range of applications of any type of device. Uses including cutting and welding metals, surgery, data reading and transmission, holography, accurate measurement of physical parameters, nondestructive testing, and marking products on the production line.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6f568ad105361a0b49477abcebd08d30\" style=\"color:#323232\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>How does a laser work?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-0c3151d3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">All lasers share the same basic principles but are differentiated by the way the products are engineered, by the materials used and by the characteristics of the laser output beam.<br><br><strong>The Laser Light Spectrum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">Lasers for product marking occupy the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum from 10600 nm for CO2 lasers to 1055 \u2013 1070 nm for Ytterbium fiber lasers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">By way of comparison, laser pocket pointers are diode lasers that occupy the 671 nm light wavelength.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"690\" height=\"364\" src=\"https:\/\/linx-develop.go-vip.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laser-light-spectrum.jpg?w=690\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2568\" style=\"width:380px;height:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/linx-develop.go-vip.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laser-light-spectrum.jpg 690w, https:\/\/linx-develop.go-vip.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/laser-light-spectrum.jpg?resize=300,158 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#323232\">Components of a laser<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">There are three main components to any laser:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The lasing medium<\/strong>&nbsp;This can be a gas such as carbon dioxide (CO2), a solid such as Neodymium: Yttrium Aluminium Garnet (Nd:YAG) or a liquid such as a dye. One of the properties of a lasing medium is that it can store energy in a specific way, known as a population inversion. The lasing medium will emit light (photons) as a way of removing excess stored energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The excitation mechanism<\/strong>&nbsp;The means by which energy is applied to excite the particles (atoms or molecules) of the lasing medium. Energy can be applied in the form of an electric current, electric discharge, light source, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The optical resonator<\/strong>&nbsp;The system that extracts the stored energy from the lasing medium in the form of a laser beam. In its simplest form the optical resonator consists of a mirror at either end of the lasing medium. These mirrors are parallel to each other so that photons travelling along the axis of the two mirrors are continuously reflected backwards and forwards (resonate) between the mirrors. These new photons are identical to the original photons that caused the stimulated emission. They are the same colour (wavelength), they travel in the same direction and they are in phase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-79a027b584b54e7c7340cc62c11364f4 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">The photons transmitted by the partially reflective mirror form the laser beam. The remaining photons are reflected back through the lasing medium to continue the stimulated emission process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull has-ghost-white-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:50px\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><strong><strong><strong><strong>How does laser marking work?<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-54ae67c5a0a683171de70e01ad87a33c wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">Laser marking is achieved by removing material from the substrate or by changing the surface of the substrate. The most important consideration is how well the material being coded absorbs the laser beam. This can determine the type of laser used as different wavelengths can have different absorption characteristics. If the laser beam is transmitted or reflected, then coding becomes more difficult or even impossible.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-076a200d61f4b5262369c863f3d6e4f5 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">For optimum results the focused laser beam has to be absorbed in the top few microns of the material surface, so that sufficient energy density is produced to modify the surface by one of the following three processes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-0c3151d3 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color\" style=\"color:#323232\">Etching<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-dbaefb9383c90ae82a5ff60a3fdbf6a6 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">The laser vaporises material from the surface of the substrate without necessarily producing any colour change. (This is the process which occurs in the laser marking of polymers such as PET.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-f21aae08f04383eaf8d40f239b1ff16f wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">These marks look similar to an embossed print. On glass the laser induces thermal stress, causing microcracks in the surface and resulting in tiny glass crystals being ejected from the surface to produce a mark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color\" style=\"color:#323232\">Coating removal<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-2c173a7744575f85bd7d5ec8e08ce598 wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">The laser is absorbed by the substrate or surface coating, vaporising the coating to reveal a contrasting substrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-fac79a7327231be5f24516a2956a3bcf wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">An example of this process is the removal of coloured ink printed on to white paper or card.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color\" style=\"color:#323232\">Thermochemical<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-42cc7a9c8dc0820cec1f7b22af93fd7e wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">The laser changes the material by heating it to a sufficiently high temperature to break molecular bonds. The new material formed by this process may have a different colour, thus producing a discernible mark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"types\" style=\"color:#323232\">Types of laser<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-3b5b78d08d7c7f32c9a4f6e73f952bda wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\">The majority of laser marking systems use one of four types of laser:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-227167d486e8a55cb781597e6aef9e2e wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\"><strong>CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/strong>\u00a0lasers use a mixture of gasses which are excited by an electric discharge. These lasers have a typical infrared output of 9.3 \u00b5m, 10.2 \u00b5m or 10.6 \u00b5m wavelength.<br><br>CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0laser coding technology can be used to code and mark almost every kind of surface, from glass to plastic to coated metals, across every kind of industry and any production line. Instead of a gas as the lasing medium, an optical fibre is used. The laser beam is generated and confined inside the core of the fibre, which is doped with ions such as yterrbium that is typically excited by a diode laser. This technological setup leads to an emission wavelength band of 1.05 \u00b5m to 1.08 \u00b5m with its centre at 1.06 \u00b5m.<br><br>Linx Fibre lasers can permanently mark on a wide range of materials, including metal, rubber, plastic, and packaging foils. The very fine spot size creates excellent quality codes and makes Linx Fibre lasers ideal for marking very small components, or large amounts of information onto small areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-small-font-size wp-elements-2e87b0a07082b5ede9207b8dee3bb1ab wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#323232\"><strong>Nd:YAG<\/strong>&nbsp;this is a crystal which is commonly excited by a flash lamp (an intense light source) or by a diode laser.
